SDS Compliance in English-Speaking Countries

United States

  • The Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) (29 CFR 1910.1200(g)) requires employers to maintain up-to-date Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) for each hazardous chemical used in the workplace.
  • SDSs must be in a consistent, 16-section format for easy reference.
  • SDSs are organized alphabetically by manufacturer name for streamlined access.

Canada

  • Under WHMIS 2015 (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System), all hazardous workplace chemicals must follow the Globally Harmonized System (GHS) classification and labeling requirements.
  • Transition from WHMIS 1988 to WHMIS 2015 was completed on December 1, 2018, ensuring all SDSs meet the latest compliance standards.

United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand

  • Compliance with COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations) in the UK requires employers to maintain updated SDS records for hazardous substances.
  • Ireland follows EU REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation, and Restriction of Chemicals) regulations, requiring SDSs to be up to date and accessible.
