Cal/OSHA requires annual workplace violence prevention training for employees in veterinary workplaces under California Labor Code section 6401.9 (Senate Bill 553).

This law, which went into effect on July 1, 2024, requires virtually all California employers, including veterinary clinics and hospitals (as they are generally considered "general industry" for this standard, not human healthcare), to establish, implement, and maintain a written Workplace Violence Prevention Plan (WVPP).

Key Cal/OSHA Veterinary Training Requirements

The law mandates the following regarding employee training:

  1. Initial Training: Training must be provided when the WVPP is first established.
  2. Annual Training: Employees must receive effective training at least annually thereafter.
  3. Additional Training: Further training must be provided when a new or previously unrecognized workplace violence hazard is identified, or when changes are made to the WVPP.
  4. The training itself must cover the employer's specific WVPP, the procedures for reporting incidents and hazards, and an opportunity for interactive questions and answers.

In response, we developed a free veterinary workplace violence course to help protect reception staff members, vet techs, and veterinarians from such violence.

This course leaves you with tools, tactics, and policies, to ensure the safety and well-being of veterinary professionals as they care for animals and interact with clients.
